Neighbours celebrates anniversary, Amid Kylie Rumours

Current stars of Neighbours celebrated 25 years and 6000 episodes of the soap with a party at The Olsen in Melbourne yesterday. Sam Clark, who plays Ringo Brown, will be leaving the show at the end of the month to persue his singing career. He was surrounded by his female cast mates, including Brit Gabriella Darlington who won Five’s competition to play Poppy Rogers. Even though initial reports were laughed off, rumours of a Kylie Minogue cameo continue, as the former star of the show is in the Australian city visiting Dannii and Ethan.

Stefan Dennis (aka Paul Robinson) sipped bubbly with Scott Major (Lucas Fitzgerald) and Alan Fletcher (Karl Kennedy). Stefan appeared in the first ever episode, and he plays a key part in the 6000th episode. His onscreen son Jordan Smith (Andrew Robinson) smiled wide with Ryan Moloney (Toadie Rebecchi) and Matthew Werkmeister (Zeke Kinsky), while Carla Bonner (Steph Scully) got close to Sam.

Ramsay Street rues ratings…

Everybody loves good Neighbours, except when they’re under-performing. The latest speculation about the future of the stalwart Network Ten soap is a possible move to Ten’s third channel, expected to launch next year.

A well-placed source said it was one proposal being looked at for the ailing series, which celebrates its 6000th episode next month.

“They need to do something with it, and this is on the table, although it’s certainly not something (production company) FremantleMedia would be happy with,” the source said.

“I hear (Southern Star CEO) Rory Callaghan is looking at delivering a slick new soap that Ten can strip (air five nights a week). Whether this replaces Neighbours remains to be seen.”

Ten head of programming David Mott was somewhat obtuse in responding. “There’s certainly a lot of speculation in the landscape, and, somewhere amongst all this, will be the truth, and the truth will be known when we’re ready to announce something,” he said.

“Neighbours does need some work, and we’re hoping we can get there on that. I can say that Neighbours will be part of the Ten family going forward, and there’s a deal we’re talking to Fremantle about at the moment.”

Despite an expensive relaunch in 2007, Neighbours’ ratings have slid as low as 534,000 nationally. The program’s 6000th episode – Margot Robbie is pictured filming it earlier this year – will screen on August 27.

Fletcher teases ‘Neighbours’ wedding

Neighbours star Alan Fletcher has promised that the soap’s latest wedding will be a “joyous” occasion.

Earlier this month, it was revealed that Ringo Brown (Sam Clark) and Donna Freedman (Margot Robbie) are to tie the knot in the show’s 6,000th episode after two years as on-off lovers.

Speaking to Holy Soap, Fletcher confirmed that his character Karl Kennedy will attend the couple’s big day and be involved “in a surprising manner – certainly in a way he wasn’t expecting”.

He explained: “The good thing about weddings on Ramsay Street is nothing goes according to plan and this one’s no different. But the really nice thing about weddings is that ultimately they are some of the most joyous experiences on the programme.”

Fletcher added that episode 6,000 will also feature an event that is “not so joyous” for one character, as he previously teased on Live From Studio Five this week.

He said: “If you haven’t been watching Neighbours for a while, you need to start tuning in now to prepare yourself for the 6,000th episode, when things really hot up.”
