Margot Robbie: I idolised Dakota Fanning

Margot Robbie used to panic when she saw Dakota Fanning in big movies.

The 24-year-old actress is one of the hottest names in the industry right now thanks to her role opposite Leonardo DiCaprio in 2013’s The Wolf of Wall Street and a recent nomination for the EE BAFTA Rising Star award.

Australian-born Margot started out with a role in soap Neighbours and remembers feeling an intense urge to make it in America. And seeing 20-year-old Dakota make waves really pushed her along.

“I would freak out, because I was only 17 and Dakota Fanning was younger than me and doing all these films. I would say to myself, ‘I need to get a move on,'” she admitted to ShortList magazine.

“I’m just a very impatient person. I remember when I signed with my agent, I told him we needed to get the ball rolling with the US. He said, ‘You don’t need to be in such a hurry,’ and I said, ‘Yes I do.’ The person I compared myself to was so much younger than me, and I needed to get a move on. My agent said, ‘Enough with Dakota Fanning!’ I think I drove him crazy. I used every minute I got.”

Neighbours didn’t exactly ease Margot into her career, with the star describing it as a “bootcamp” for actors. When she walked off set, she promised herself she’d never work on anything as tough again, although she admits it taught her good discipline.

Her latest film is Focus, which co-stars Will Smith. Many know him as The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, but Margot was blissfully unaware.

“Will is everything you can imagine, and more – but I’d actually never heard of The Fresh Prince Of Bel-Air,” she confessed.

“He was… not offended, but maybe a little surprised I didn’t know who Jazzy Jeff was. I didn’t understand a lot of the references, which of course the crew were all over. I said his name wrong, I called him Jazzy Jam or something. Will said, ‘Are you serious” I had no idea what he was talking about. I think he thought I was a lost cause.”

Margot Robbie Auditioned for Focus After Not Sleeping for Two Days, Recalls Looking “Horrendous”.

Margot Robbie was on vacation in Croatia when she heard she had landed an audition with Will Smith for upcoming flick Focus the following day — which meant she had to hightail it out of there and make it to New York City Amazing Race-style, the actress admitted to reporters at a press conference on Monday, Feb. 9.
“It was 6 in the morning,” the Wolf of Wall Street actress told Us Weekly and other reporters at an event in Los Angeles. “I’d been swimming, and I got the call saying, ‘Oh, yeah. You need to be doing an audition with Will Smith like tomorrow in New York. So your flight’s booked for tonight.'”
“And I was like, ‘Tonight? Oh, my God.’ I asked the lady at the hostel I was staying at, ‘Oh, how do I get off this island? I need to go to the mainland.’ And she was like, ‘Oh, there’s only one boat a day, and it leaves in 20 minutes.’ And I was like, ‘Oh, my God,’” she continued.
Robbie recalled she then grabbed all her belongings, “left half of it probably in the hostel,” and got to the airport.
“I waited eight hours, and then I went to France, and then I went to New York. And by the time I got to New York, I’d now not slept for, like, well over two days,” she said.
To make it all even more chaotic? The blonde said the airline also lost her luggage.
“My audition was about seven hours away,” she explained. “So I walk into the audition in wet sneakers and denim shorts and a pajama shirt, which was the only dry thing I had before they lost my luggage. I just walked in. And I was like, ‘I cannot meet Will Smith in my pajama shirt.’ So I went to Topshop and grabbed [a] top and then walked in.”
Smith, who was present for what she’s dubbed the “horrendous” moment, chimed in and told reporters, “No, no” she didn’t look awful.

Sundance: Chiwetel Ejiofor and Margot Robbie Discuss the Postapocalyptic Z for Zachariah.

I was in the first press audience to screen Z for Zachariah, and I walked out practically skipping, along with several of my fellow journalists, because we’d been so enthralled by this tense, quiet drama, set against stunning New Zealand scenery, in which Margot Robbie, Chiwetel Ejiofor, and Chris Pine play the last people on Earth. Our reviewer Bilge Ebiri, who saw the movie the next day, felt otherwise. But we both agree that the performances were outstanding. An adaptation of Robert C. O’Brien’s 1974 postapocalyptic children’s book, Z for Zachariah is a step toward more mainstream filmmaking for director Craig Zobel, who made waves at Sundance two years ago with Compliance, based on the true story of a prank caller who manipulated fast-food managers into conducting harrowing interrogations of their employees.

Pine’s character is a new addition to the story, and the age of Robbie’s character, Ann, has thankfully been increased from the book’s 16 to something more appropriate for a woman upon whose womb rests the fate of mankind. I spoke with Robbie and Ejiofor about their apocalypse-survival skills, on-set toga parties, and how not even the end of the world can stop racial and sexual tension.

MY STYLIST WON ME OVER WITH BEER (VIDEO)

The actress says THR power stylist Cristina Ehrlich handed her a cold brew after an exhausting first day together, causing her to exclaim: “We are going to get along so well.”

Margot Robbie has spilled the secret to winning her heart: a good beer.

The Wolf of Wall Street actress says stylist Cristina Ehrlich plied her with a beer after an exhausting first day of work together, and that’s how she knew the pair would make a great team.

“I went for six hours, and we were delirious,” the Wolf of Wall Street star recalls while sitting next to Ehrlich, who is No. 8 on The Hollywood Reporter’s 25 Most Powerful Stylists of 2014. “The first thing you did was offered me a beer, and I was like ‘We are going to get along so well. This is my kind of stylist.’ ”

Robbie — who affectionately calls Ehrlich “Mama C” — says before meeting up with THR for the shoot, her stylist was feeding her “like I was a baby.”

“She takes care of me. Today she was spoon feeding me my lunch … while I was getting zipped into dresses, because that’s how little time we had.”

Ehrlich says “there is a nod to old Hollywood” in her client, but “she has a very glamorous feel about her that is very modern.”
