Actress Margot Robbie has starred as Leonardo DiCaprio’s wife in “The Wolf of Wall Street,” played super villain Harley Quinn in “Suicide Squad,” and was recently nominated for an Academy Award for her portrayal of Tonya Harding in “I, Tonya.”
In her current role, the Aussie actress stars as Nissan’s electric vehicle and sustainability ambassador as the marque kicked off its Formula E launch tour in Southern California.
“I’ve already seen many of Nissan’s initiatives, designed to bring cleaner air to roads and fairer access to power across the globe. And now, we have this—a fantastic new Formula E car,” Robbie said to a small crowd of fans.
“I’m excited to see how it will help Nissan develop its EV offering further and bring new and exciting technologies to communities across the world.”
Robbie also plugged her recent Nissan videos and touted her happy Leaf EV ownership.
Ana Paola Reginatto, Nissan head of EV products, tells us Nissan’s Global Design team designed the livery and the company is the first Japanese marque to enter Formula E.
“Its heart is full of green energy and our Formula E car was made for the future,” Reginatto adds.
Nissan enters the ABB FIA Formula E Championship series in December. It revealed the EV race car at the Geneva Motor Show and it made its U.S. debut at the 2018 New York Auto Show last month.
Nissan’s global motorsport director Michael Carcamo was also on hand to remind us of the company’s 70-year history of working with electric vehicles.
“Entering the ABB FIA Formula E Championship gives Nissan a key development platform for our EV technologies,” Carcamo said.
“Using the same streets that our Leaf customers also commute on as race tracks has real benefits for customers—we’ll be able to take on real road conditions with our race cars—and we can share what we’ve learned as we tune our latest electric vehicles.”
Carcamo hasn’t had any seat time behind the wheel of Nissan’s Formula E car—“My insurance doesn’t cover it,” he tells us. But he did confirm that the EV has a top speed of 155 mph and features a new 54 kW battery pack that’s nearly double the range of the previous 24 kW batteries used last season. Instead of two cars per race, now teams will only have to race with one.
The Formula E series travels to New York, Paris, Berlin, Rome, Zurich, and Hong Kong when the fifth season begins at the end of the year.
